23 people killed, over 300 feared trapped in Pune landslide; Home Minister at site of accident

In Maharashtra, at least 23 people have been killed and more than 300 feared trapped after a landslide triggered by heavy rain flattened Malin village in Ambegaon taluka of Pune district yesterday.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh has reached the spot to take stock of the situation.

The landslide struck Malin village yesterday morning when most of the people were sleeping. A temple and a primary school were among those flattened by the landslide. The Disaster Response Force spokesman said, the landslide affected 46 of the 70 houses in the tribal village.The death toll is likely to go up.

Officials said, 20 seriously injured people have been rescued from the debris. Frequent spells of rain hampered the rescue and relief operations being carried out by 400 NDRF personnel and other agencies.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan visited the site last evening and reviewed the rescue operations.
