In Kolkata, at least 22 people are feared killed in a devastating fire which broke out in the basement of the AMRI hospital in Dhakuria in the souther part of the city. The fire broke out at around 4 in the Friday morning. The ICCU ward of the hospital was severely affected by the fire. Twenty five fire tenders have been pressed in to service. Two ladders of the fire brigade are also in the job of rescuing patients, doctors and nurses from the hospital. A thick blanket of black smoke has engulfed the hospital and its surrounding areas. The West Bengal PWD Minister Mr. Firhad Hakim is at the spot and taking stock of the fire fighting operation. Several patients have been rescued by the firemen and taking two adjacent buildings where they are being treated for fire and smoke injuries. The State Fire Brigade Minister Mr. Javed Khan is overseeing the fire fighting operations. Gas windows of the hospital have been broken by the fire brigade people to let the smoke out of the hospital building and to rescue patients inside the hospital. A team of National Disaster Management Group is also at work at the site to save the lives of patients, doctors and nurses. Senior police and civil officials of the city have reached the spot.
