21% turnout recorded in Assam final phase polls; PM to vote in Guwahati

In Assam, peaceful polling is on for Guwahati, Nagaon,Mangoldoi,Dhubri,Barpeta and Kokrajhar seats amidst tight security.

Chief Electoral Officer said that 21 percent voting has been reported when reports last came in.

He said that in some polling booths, EVMs malfunction has been reported but polling officials replaced the faulty machines. Several ministers of the Assam government, President of Asom Gana Parishad Prafulla Kumar Mahanta have already exercised their voting rights.

Men, women and new voters- all have turned up to cast their vote leaving the comfort of homes in scorching heat. Voters were seen queuing up outside polling booths since 5 am.

A strict security measures have been taken to ensure smooth polling and no untoward incident has been reported so far. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and his wife are likely to cast vote at Dispur government higher secondary school polling booth in Guwahati.
