20th Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow tonight

The 20th Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow, Scotland tonight. Described as the third-biggest multi-sporting event after the Olympics and the Asian Games, the Commonwealth Games will witness around 4,500 athletes competing for 261 medals spread over 17 sports. For the first time, 22 para-sport events will be contested in five different sports.India's second largest ever contingent is taking part in all the events, except Netball, Rubgy Sevens and Triathlon. Indian athletes will have to toil hard if they' have to replicate their 2010 Delhi Games performance, as Archery and Tennis have been scrapped, some events in Shooting removed, and the Greco-Roman category in Wrestling also not included. Archery and Tennis have been replaced by Triathlon and Judo.The opening ceremony will be held at the Celtic Park tonight, while the events will begin from tomorrow.All India Radio will broadcast live commentary on the opening ceremony from 12:25 AM. It can be heard on the FM Gold, Rajdhani and the National Channel. You can also listen to highlights of the Games daily from 7:05 AM.Our correspondent looking at medal contenders at these Games says with no Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, Asafa Powell and Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce in the 100 and 200 metres races, all eyes will be on who will win the Gold at the two major sprint events, which have been dominated by Jamaica for almost a decade. Bolt and Fraser-Pryce are, however, expected to figure in the Men's and Women's 4X100 metres relay, the events Jamaica is a favourite to win. Current Olympic and World Champion in both 5,000 and 10,000 metres, British runner Mo Farah is a top contender to win Gold at both the events. Some other athletes who are most likely to claim top honours at the Glasgow Games include, four-time World and 2-time Olympic and Commonwealth champion in shot-put Valerie Adams of New Zealand, Britons–Tom Daley in 100-metre platform diving, Michael Jamieson in Swimming, Greg Rutherford in Long Jump, and Geraint Thomas in Track cycling. Shooting, Wrestling, Boxing, Badminton and Hockey are events which will witness the Indian prowess. Marksmen Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang, and flag-bearer Vijay Kumar; Grapplers Sushil Kumar and Yogeshwar Dutt; Pugilists L. Devendro Singh and Pinki Jangra; Shuttlers PV Sindhu and P. Kashyap; Sourav Ghoshal and Dipika Pallikal in Squash; Discus thrower Krishna Poonia, and Swimmer Sandeep Sejwal are some of the Indian names that are expected to win big at these Glasgow Games.
