2015-16 to be observed as Water Conservation Year: Uma Bharti

Water Resources Minister Uma Bharti has stressed the need for interlinking of rivers to save excess water from floods. Speaking at an International Seminar in New Delhi today, Ms Bharti said that her Ministry has finalized 30 river interlinking projects which will be implemented in the next 10 years. The Union Cabinet has recently approved the Ken-Betwa link. She said that interlinking is being done keeping in view the aqua life and ecological balance.Ms Bharti said that 2015-16 will be observed as Water Conservation Year and the main objective of the programme is to make it a public movement in each and every district of the country to spread awareness for conservation of water. Ms Bharati said that her Ministry has taken steps to clean the Yamuna in Delhi and the Lt.Governor has recently started the Yamuna wing in the Delhi Development Authority-DDA, to take up issues related to the river. On Ganga,she said that her Ministry is coordinating with other Ministries to stop pollution and make the river clean.
