In Bangladesh, three former Inspector Generals of Bangladesh Police have been sent to jail after they surrendered in court on Monday, following the CID naming them in supplementary chargesheet filed in the 2004 grenade attack case. The court had issued arrest warrants against the three officers and fifteen others including Former Prime Minister and BNP Leader Khaleda Zia’s son Tarique Rahman after the CID accused them of aiding and abetting the attack on an Awami League rally apparently targeted to kill Sheikh Hasina. While Sheikh Hasina escaped, the attack had left 24 dead and nearly 300 injured. The three senior police officers Ashraful Huda, Khoda Baksh Chowdhury and Shahudul Haque accused in the case surrendered before the Metropolitan Majistrate court on Monday morning in Dhaka. The three officers also filed bail applications with the court. However, Metropolitan Magistrate Keshob Roy Chowdhury rejected the bail plea and ordered to send the three former police chiefs to jail. AIR Correspondent reports, according to the investigation report filed by the Criminal investigation department in the 2004 grenade attack case, the attack was carried out by the operatives of Harkatul Jihad al Islami and was backed by senior leaders of the past BNP-led four-party coalition government and security and police officials. The court after taking cognisance of the chargesheet issued arrest warrants against Tarique Rahman and seventeen others of which the three former police chiefs have surrendered on Monday. Khaleda Zia’s elder son Tarique Rahman who faces several cases is currently under treatment in the UK after being released on parole in 2008. The charges against Tarique Rahman comes just a few days after a Bangladesh court sentenced Khaleda Zia's younger son Arafat Rahman Koko to six years in prison in a money laundering case. The BNP is organising countrywide demonstrations to protest against the charges filed against Tarique Rahman and senior BNP leaders.
