In Syria, at least 20 people are reported killed and dozens injured as army and police opened fire on anti-government protesters. Activists said most of the deaths were in southern Deraa province, but there were also reports of shootings in Homs. The United States and several other countries have called upon the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to step down. Russia has rejected the US call saying that President Assad should be given more time to enact reforms.
