20 killed as passenger launch capsizes in B’desh

In Bangladesh, twenty people have died and a number of passengers are reported to be missing after a passenger launch capsized in the Meghna river Wednesday night in Sarail upazila of Brahmanbaria which is about 109 kilometers away from Dhaka. Officer-in-Charge of Sarail Police Station Zohirul Islam told All India Radio Correspondent in Dhaka that the accident occurred around 3 .30 a.m last night and twenty bodies have been recovered so far till about three pm Thursday afternoon. Some of the passengers managed to swim to safety while search operations are on for the missing passengers. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority’s salvage vessel Rustom has been sent to the accident site to help in the search operations. According to reports the launch vessel which left from Bhairab was carrying around 70 passengers when it capsized after hitting a cargo vessel which had sunk in the area.
