20 killed, 145 injured as passenger train derails in Maharashtra’s Raigad district

At least 20 people including two women died and another 145 injured in the Diva- Sawantwadi passenger train mishap in Raigad district of Maharashtra. The injured have been admitted to the Roha, Nagothane and Alibaug government hospitals. Meanwhile, some of the seriously injured passengers have been shifted to hospitals in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai area.

AIR correspondent reports, relief and rescue operations at the accident site of Diva Sanatwadi passenger train in Raigad district is now nearing completion. Fifty ambulances were pressed into service to ferry the injured to the hospitals. Besides, special medical relief trains were also rushed to the spot.

Sixty police officials from Raigad district helped the railway authorities in the rescue operations. At least four trains have been cancelled and routes of another 13 trains have been diverted following the mishap. Special State Transport buses have been pressed into service for the convenience of the Passengers.

Railway authorities said they are making every possible effort to clear the track so that normal train services are restored.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra home minister R R Patil and Guardian minister Sunil Tatkare visited the accident site and later met the injured in Roha government hospital.
