In Jammu and Kashmir, two top Lashkar-e-Toiba militants, involved in a series of attacks on civilians and army troops, were killed in a gunbattle with security forces in Sopore town of Baramulla district yesterday. A police spokesman said, two bodies have been recovered from the debris of the house where the militants were hiding. One of them has been identified as Muzammil alias Urfi, a self-styled Divisional Commander of Lashkar. The spokesman said that Abdullah Shaheen, the other slain militant, was a resident of Pakistan.
Earlier, police said Muzammil was one of the militants wanted in connection with the blast inside the High Court in Delhi last year. Police later clarified Muzammil was not connected with the Delhi High Court blast. They said, Muzammil and three other LeT ultras, who were arrested in February this year, had planned to carry out terror strikes in Delhi.
An Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police, a soldier and a CRPF jawan were injured in the gunfight that erupted in
Chanakhan locality, some 52-km from Srinagar on Saturday.
