2-day National Conference on 'Sustainable Agriculture & Farmer's Welfare' begins in Gangtok today

The two-day National Conference on "Sustainable Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare" is beginning in Gangtok today. The conference is being held in Sikkim which has also taken the lead in organic farming. <br/><br/>The conference will be attended by state government representatives, scientists, academicians, bankers, experts and practitioners. Prime Minister will attend the conference on 18th January .<br/><br/>He will be the chief guest at the plenary session of the conference. Union Agriculture Minister and several State Ministers for Agriculture will also be attending the conference. <br/><br/>Alongside the conference, a three day "Organic Farming Festival" is also being organized to give more impetus to Organic Farming. During his two day Sikkim visit Prime Minister will also be inaugurating a "Flower Show" on 18th January and A 'Organic Products Exhibition" on 19th January. <br/><br/>The two day National Conference on Sustainable Agriculture and Farmer's Welfare will deliberate upon the challenges and identify initiatives to transform agriculture based on sustainable and efficient use of resources like soil and water, remunerative prices on farm produce ,risk coverage and reduction of potential negative impact of climate change.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, the national conference on sustainable agriculture and farmer's welfare is significant for many reasons. <br/><br/>Growth rate in agriculture is comparatively slower than other sectors and Official data shows that by 2025 India has to provide food to its 150 corer population. Advance water and irrigation management ,fertility of land ,enhancing investment in agriculture ,organic farming are some of the areas going to be discussed in details in this conference . <br/><br/>All these Issues related to agriculture be discussed in technical sessions today and recommendations will also be presented before prime minister tomorrow during his visit. <br/><br/>Both National Conference on sustainable agriculture and Sikkim Organic Festival will be inaugurated this morning at Gangatok. Union Minister of Agriculture Radha Mohan Singh will be the chief guest of function.
