1st session of 16th LS to be held from 4-11 June

The first session of the 16th Lok Sabha will be held from the 4th to the 11th of next month. The decision was taken by the Union Cabinet today at a meeting in New Delhi.

Briefing media, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Venkaiah Naidu said, on the first two-days of the session, newly-elected MPs will be sworn-in and on the 6th, Lok Sabha Speaker will be elected. Mr Naidu said, President Pranab Mukherjee will address a joint sitting of the two Houses of Parliament on 9th June.

The session of Rajya Sabha will commence on the same day after the joint sitting. He said, if needed, the session can be extended by a day.

The Parliamentary Affairs Minister said, Congress leader Kamal Nath, who is the senior most member in the House, will be the pro-tem Speaker. Besides, Arjun Charan Sethi, P A Sangma and Biren Singh Engte will be on the panel to assist Mr Nath in administering the oath.

When asked whether Congress would be given the post of the Leader of Opposition despite it not having the requisite numbers, Mr. Nadu said the government is studying various precedents while discussing the issue and there is still time to take that call.

He also said, there was no discussion about the Budget session in today's Cabinet meeting. The Minister , however, said that the regular budget for 2014-15 should have to be passed in any case before the 28th of July.
