The 1984 riots issue rocked both Houses of Parliament today. While the Rajya Sabha was adjourned till 2 P.M., the Lok Sabha witnessed heated exchanges between the ruling and the opposition benches. The issue was brought in the two houses by opposition in the wake the closure of cases relating to the riots against Jagdish Tytler by the CBI and a Delhi court accepting the report by the Premier Investigating Agency. Raising the issue in Rajya Sabha during zero hour today, Sukhbir Singh Dhindsa of Akali Dal and Avtar Singh Karimpuri of the BSP alleged that despite the constitution of several Commissions, justice had not been delivered to the victims in the anti-riots cases. The Shiv Sena and BJP members trooped into the well of the House shouting slogans demanding justice and action against Congress leader Sajjan Kumar and Jagdish Tytler who they said had been found guilty of instigating mobs following the assassination of Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi. The issue was raised by Mrs. Harsimrat Kaur Badal in Lok Sabha who also alleged that action had not been taken against the accused even two decades after the incident. Mrs. Badal said that Central investigation agency CBI was acting in a dubious way to save the skin of people belonging to ruling party and witnesses were being pressurized, coerced and threatened to retract their original statements
The Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Pawan Kumar Bansal while describing it the most tragic and painful said that the Prime Minister has not only apologized but has even stated that the cases can even be reopened. He however accused the Opposition of taking political mileage over the issue. He appealed to the Opposition not to whip up passions. Rejecting the accusations of the misuse of the CBI, Mr. Bansal said that government does not misuse official machinery and the judiciary is independent in the country.
