1962 war porter ‘Tsetan Namgyal’: Familiar name in army circles of eastern Ladakh

Ladakh is one region that has participated in all the wars that India fought. Right from Kashmir war in 1947 to Kargil war in 1999, many plain cloth soldiers from Ladakh have contributed. Army civilian symbiosis is exemplary in Ladakh.<br />”&nbsp;<br />”On the occasion of AIR Leh’s Golden Jubilee of AIR correspondent interacted with Tsetan Namgyal, a 1962 war porter.<br />”<br />”A Report<br />”Octagenarian Tsetan Namgyal is familiar name in Army circles in Chushul sector in the eastern Ladakh Region. He lives in Yurgo of Pobrang village on the banks of Pangong Tso. He was associated with Indian Army at the age of 23 as porter during the 1962 war with China. Tsetan Namgyal recalls, People's Liberation Army was huge in numbers. When he was serving with the Gorkha Regiment in Ladakh region, they were abducted for over six months and imprisoned in Yarken in China.<br />”&nbsp;<br />”<span style="color: #222222;">Tsetan says, they didn't give any punishment, but tried to extract only information from them. However, Giggly Tsetan says China treated them well. Due to age, he doesn't remember where exactly they were freed. He continued to serve Indian army at various places in India after release. As he was associated with Param Vir Chakra Dhan Singh Thapa, the locals call him in Thapa's name. Indian Army respects Tsetan Namgyal's contribution and supports him in his old age. Tsetan says it's pride for him being an uneducated lay man to serve Indian Army for ten years.&nbsp;</span><br />
