Pakistan Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani has described the 18th constitutional amendment bill as a dividend of the politics of reconciliation. He said, the bill will strengthen institutions and create a balance of power between the President and parliament.

Mr. Gilani made the remarks while initiating the debate on the bill after it was tabled in the National Assembly or lower house of parliament last evening. The bill is based on a landmark constitutional reforms package finalised by a parliamentary panel last week to strip the President of his sweeping powers. He said, the 18th constitutional amendment bill will help restore the constitution of 1973 that was framed by former premier Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto. Mr. Gilani said the bill will also give maximum autonomy to the provinces and ensure the smooth running of state institutions within their ambit and stop any conflict between them.
