17th Asian Games opens at Incheon

The 17th edition of the Asian Games kicked off at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium in South Korea on Friday. The four-hour long grand opening ceremony showcased the rich cultural heritage of the Korean peninsula. South Korean President Park Geun-hye declared open the Games. Sheikh Ahmad Al-Fahad Al-Sabah, President of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) and President of Kuwait Olympic Committee followed it up with a Korean greeting. He welcomed the athletes saying they are the soul of the Asiad movement. He also thanked the 45 National Olympic Associations for making it a reality. In the march past of the athletes at the opening ceremony, Men's hockey team captain Sardar Singh was bestowed with the honour of Indian contingent's flag bearer.Among the events Indian competitors figuring tomorrow are Badminton, Equestrian, Judo, Rowing and Shooting.Overall, the 17th Asiad will be competed in 439 events in 36 disciplines at 49 sports venues.
