The Asian Games, the second largest multi-sport event after the Olympics, begin in Incheon, South Korea today. The opening ceremony will take place at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium at 3:30 PM Indian Time, while the events will kick off from tomorrow. Around 13,000 athletes from 45 nations will compete in the next 15 days in 439 events spread across 36 sports and disciplines. 516 Indian athletes will be seen vying for top honours in 28 sports. Men's Hockey team captain Sardar Singh will be India's flag bearer at the opening ceremony. With every Games, be it Olympics, Asiad or Commonwealth, come certain facts that make the event memorable for years to follow. The Incheon Games are no different! To begin with, the Organising Committee has found a novel way of keeping the Games history alive. Stones have been engraved at the Athletes' village, mentioning the venues of the 17 editions held till date. The stone depicting India hosting the first Games in 1951 gets a special place at the incline. Current hosts Incheon is at the top of the incline. Besides, ahead of the Games, athletes were entertained by local artists during the flag hoisting ceremony yesterday. Apart from this, the mascots, the motto also play an integral part in the Games. The motto this time is, 'Diversity Shines Here'. The mascots are three spotted seal siblings named, 'Barame', 'Chumuro' and 'Vichuon', which in Korean means wind, dance and light.Another interesting feature of these Games is the medals design, which features the pentagon-shaped symbol representing the five ports of Incheon – Airport, Seaport, Teleport, Leisureport and Businessport, with the emblem of the Games inside.
