The seventeen Indians, who have been languishing in Sharjah jail for almost three years on murder charges are expected to be free following the judgment of the Sharjah Court of Appeal monday. They have been awarded a deportation after two-year jail sentence. The Indian consul General Sanjay Verma told in a press conference that since the 17 Indians have already been imprisoned for more over two years, their release appears imminent. He added that Consulate is processing their travel documents and will arrange for their air tickets to India.The 17 accused were pardoned by the family of the deceased. It became possible after some people from Indian community led by Dubai-based Indian businessman- SP Singh Oberoi paid 30 lakh 39 thousand Dirhams in the Sharjah Court of Appeals as during the appeal process, the Sharjah court of appeals suggested that both sides consider a mutually agreeable understanding for an early resolution of the case. The 17 Indians were pronounced the death sentence by Sharjah Court of First Instance for allegedly killing a Pakistani national in January 2009.Owing to extraordinary nature of the sentence, the Government of India had hired noted lawyer Mohammad Salman and the case was reopened in the Sharjah Appeal Court in May 2010. The judgement was welcomed by relatives and friends of the accused as well as the Indian community in the UAE.
