16th SAARC summit concludes; Leaders pledge to work together

Curtains came down at the 16th SAARC Summit at Thimphu in Bhutan, with the leaders of Eight South Asian countries renewing their pledge to work together to make the region a vibrant zone in the world. <br/><br/>The Summit also adopted a Declaration entitled-Towards a Green and Happy South Asia, besides a separate Ministerial Declaration on Climate Change.<br/> <br/>Two important SAARC Agreements, on Environment and Trade in Services, were also signed on the concluding day of the Summit. <br/>The leaders also agreed to host the 17th SAARC Summit in Maldives. Speaking on the occasion, the President of Maldives Mohammed Nasheed said, as they celebrate the 25th anniverasry of SAARC, this is also a time to take stock of the past achievements and the future challenges.<br/><br/>In his concluding remarks the Prime Minister of Bhutan Jigme.Y.Thinley congratulated the members and delegates for taking concrete decisions at the Summit, particularly in the field of climate Change. He said, the organization of the event in Bhutan also marks the coming of age of this tiny Himalayan Kingdom.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports that the SAARC Agreement on Trade in Services will enable the realization of the region's immense potential in service areas such as Health, Hospitality, Communications, Computer and information Services and Air Transport and is expected to augment intra-regional trade in services in a mutually beneficial manner. While, the SAARC Convention on Environment is expected to promote cooperation among the SAARC countries in the field of environment and sustainable development. <br/><br/>The scope of cooperation under the Convention would extend to exchange of best practices and knowledge, capacity building and transfer of eco-friendly technology in a number of areas, including climate change, coastal zone management, wildlife conservation and environmental impact assessment studies.
