In Tamil Nadu, there seems to be no let up in the rains that have been lashing most districts across the state. The Met office in Chennai has forecast more rains in the coastal and interior districts of the state. Schools in 13 districts including Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore have been shut today, due to incessant rains. The death toll in the rain related incidents have been put at 110. The rice bowl of the state, the delta districts including Thanjavur, Nagapattinam, Thiruvarur are grappling with heavy downpour leading to large tracts of standing paddy crop being inundated. The district administrations are assessing the damages to the crops and will be sending a detailed report to the government. The state government has released 100 crore rupees, as a first step to carry out relief and rehabilitation work in the affected areas. Meanwhile, bringing cheers to the farmers in the delta region, the Mettur reservoir is fast reaching its full capacity of 120 feet. The level in the dam this afternoon was 119.82 and it is expected to reach its brim latest by this evening.AIR correspondent Sanjay Ghosh reports from Chennai that Tamil Nadu is largely dependent on the North-East monsoon for meeting its irrigation and drinking water needs. However, the vagaries of the monsoon have always left the people in despair. This year also the tale is no different. In the last week of October, the prolonged dry spell had caused concern among farmers and water managers. But in just a month’s time, there has been a complete turnaround with people saying that they have had enough of rains. Water bodies across the state have filled up, bringing cheer to the toilers. But there seems to be no stopping of rain, which now has left a trail of death and destruction. The damages are being assessed even as relief and rehabilitation are being undertaken on a war footing.
