The 14th summit of G15 will open in Tehran on Monday with the participation of 6 heads of states and number of foreign ministers including Indian foreign minister S M Krishna. The summit is expected to focus on improving south-south cooperation, addressing global inequities and assessing the impact of global economic recovery on developing nations. The Tehran summit is likely to repeat previous calls for restructuring of international financial institutions and a more equitable representation of developing countries in those institutions. The Group of Fifteen (G-15) was established at a Summit Level Group of Developing Countries in September 1989, following the conclusion of the Ninth Non-Aligned Summit Meeting in Belgrade. The six Presidents including Brazilian President Lula da Silva, Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade, Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez will attend the event along with Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who will preside over the meeting are set to hold talks on challenges facing developing countries. During the meet Sri Lanka will take over the chairmanship of the Group of 15 from Iran. The G15 focuses on cooperation among developing countries in the areas of investment, trade, and technology. Its membership has expanded to 18 countries, but the name has remained unchanged. India, Iran, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Argentina, Brazil, Venezuela, Chile, Jamaica, Mexico, Algeria, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Peru, Senegal and Zimbabwe are members of the G15. AIR Correspondent reports, the 14th summit of G-15 is expected to focus on improving south-south cooperation, addressing global inequities and assessing the impact of global economic recovery on developing nations. The Tehran summit is also likely to reiterate the demand for restructuring of international financial institutions and a more equitable representation of developing countries in those institutions. Analysts say that countries like India and Brazil have relatively developed economies with large diversified industrial bases and advanced technological capabilities in critical areas like pharmaceuticals and information technology and other member countries especially from Africa will expect a concrete support plan from them under south-south cooperation.
