14th Police Martyrs' Memorial football to kick-off in Srinagar on June 30

The 14th Police Martyrs' Memorial football tournament will kick-off in Srinagar on Saturday. Jammu and Kashmir DGP K Rajendra Kumar said the event will see 56 teams from across the country vying for top honours. Kumar told reporters in Srinagar that the tournament will be played from June 30 to July 16. He said among the teams 46 are from different corners of the state and 10 are from outside the state. The prominent teams from outside the state, taking part in the tournament this year, include Maharashtra, Bihar,Uttrakhand, West Bengal Police, Punjab University, Punjab Police, BSF and CRPF. The tournament was initially held in memory of Inspector Mushtaq Ahmad Baba, who was killed in a militant attack in 1997. However, it was later rechristened as Police Martyrs' Memorial Tournament and is organised by state police in association with Jammu and Kashmir Football association every year.Jammu and Kashmir Minister of State for Home, Nasir Aslam Wani, will inaugurate the tournament on June 30. The competition will be held at Bakshi stadium and Polo ground in the city.
