14,000 Ivorians flee to Liberia following tension due to disrupted presidential election

The United Nations says, 14,000 Ivorians have fled to neighboring Liberia as tensions grow following the country's disputed presidential election. The U.N. refugee agency said that most of the refugees are women and children and said it is seeing more malnourished children and people suffering from malaria and other diseases. Ivory Coast incumbent President Laurent Gbagbo is refusing to step down despite the international community recognizing his rival, Alassane Ouattara, as the winner of the November election. The United Nations says more than 170 people have been killed in post-election violence. It also says Mr. Gbagbo's forces and masked gunmen are blocking access to the site of a possible mass grave, in the village of N'Dotre. The presidential election was meant to stabilize Ivory Coast, eight years after a civil war split the country into rebel- and government-controlled areas.
