14 injured in Varanasi blast and stampede

In Uttar Pradesh, atleast 14 persons including four foreigners were injured in a bomb explosion and stampede today evening in Varanasi at Sheetala Ghat under Dasha Shwamedh Ghat polcie area. Other reports put the number of injured as 20.According to information received by the Ministry of Home Affairs, the blast in Varanasi was of low intensity which injured four to five people. It said that fifteen to twenty people were injured during a stampede when a railing broke. All states have been put on full alert following the blast.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports that explosive was kept under besiege of stones on the stairs of ghat. Injured have been admitted at BHU hospital. Official sources said the blast took place at Dashashwamedh ghat on the bank of the river Ganga at about 6:30 pm. Police sources said the blast occurred when thousands of devotees and the foreign tourists had assembled at the ghat for having darshan of the Ganga Arti. All states have been put on full alert following the blast.
