14 drowned, 10 missing in Andhra boat mishap

In Andhra Pradesh, at least 14 persons including 6 women were feared drowned and 10 others missing in a boat tragedy on Saturday morning. The mishap occurred when the boat ferrying nearly 50 persons overturned in river Godavari near Biyyapu Teppa village. They were on their way to attend some local festivities at Antarvedi. 25 persons were rescued and 11 bodies recovered from the site. Search operation is underway to rescue the missing persons.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, the state Government has announced an exgratia of one lakh rupees each to the next kin of the deceased.<br/><br/>The state government has pressed into service expert divers along with a helicopter and two rescue boats from the Navy in Visakhapatnam to carry out rescue operations and search the people who were still missing.<br/><br/>According to police 11 bodies including 5 of women and 5 of children have been identified. Six persons were admitted to nearby hospitals in a critical condition. Though some of them could manage to escape by jumping out of boat, most of the women and children who could not escape have tangled themselves between the fishing nets. State Governor ESL Narsimhan, Chief Minister K Rosaiah and leaders of various political parties expressed shock and grief over the incident.
