Fourteen persons were killed as heavy rains lashed most parts of North India yesterday drenching Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. All the 14 casualties were reported from UP where rivers including the Ganga, Yamuna and Ghagra continued their upward surge amid heavy rains. With the latest casualties, the total number of deaths in rain related incidents across the state this season has risen to 92. Widespread rains also continued in Rajasthan with Bikaner and Ajmer receiving maximum rainfall of 9 mm till yesterday evening. Met department predicts rain to occur at most places in southern and northern parts of the desert state in the next 24 hours. Temperatures across Punjab and Haryana dipped marginally following widespread rains. While Chandigarh was drenched by 14.6 mm of rainfall, Ludhiana received eight mm of rains and Karnal three mm of showers. But the rains could not bring much relief to people in the region due to high humidity levels which oscillated between 75 to 95 per cent. After heavy downpour and pleasant weather for the past two days, humid conditions returned to the National Capital. The maximum temperature was recorded at 34 degrees while the minimum settled at 25.2 degrees. The humidity levels oscillated between 65 and 95 percent. The weatherman expects the sky to remain generally cloudy with one or two spells of light rains in some areas today with the maximum and minimum temperatures likely to be around 34 and 25 degrees respectively.
