12th India-ASEAN Summit begins in Myanmar; Focus on commerce, connectivity & cultural exchanges

The 12th India-ASEAN Summit begins today at Nay Pyi Taw in Myanmar. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will represent India at the Summit. The Focus of the Summit is on commerce, connectivity and cultural exchanges.

India has been supportive of the initiative for ASEAN integration for narrowing the development gap, master-plan of ASEAN connectivity and the objective of an ASEAN community and a drug free ASEAN by 2015. Efforts are also on to create physical and economic corridors between ASEAN and North-East region of India, which is gateway to ASEAN.

Connectivity between ASEAN and India being one of the key priorities India is already working to increase aviation and shipping linkages. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will have a busy schedule today.
A part from attending the 12th India-ASEAN Summit, he will be meeting Prime Ministers of Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore and the President of South Korea. Later , the Nobel Prize winner and Chairperson and General Secretary of the National League for Democracy Aung Sang Suu Kyi will call on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It will be the first meeting between Modi and Myanmar Pro-Democracy leader.
