In Kerala, the eleventh edition of the Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, begins in the port city of Kochi today. Over 2000 delegates from different parts of the world are taking part in the three day event which will be formally inaugurated by the Prime Minister tomorrow.
The Pravasi Bharatiya Divas has emerged as a powerful symbol for the country and its expatriate community to articulate their close ties, by providing a platform to explore means to nurture and strengthen their bonds.
The three day annual event provides an excellent opportunity for overseas Indians to discuss key issues with the people of their homeland for mutually beneficial activities.
The very theme of the event this year, Engaging Diaspora: the Indian Growth Story, amply demonstrates the significance India attaches to the contributions made by its overseas population.
With the government taking a series of steps to further liberalise the entry of foreign capital and technology into the country, the Indian diaspora is expected to contribute more to India's growth and become an integral part of the country's economic and social development.
A series of seminars covering a vast range of subjects from Tourism to Investment Opportunities, will be held during the three day event in which Central and State Ministers, experts and eminent speakers will take part. Today, a seminar on NRIs in the Gulf is being held with an aim to boost the economic and social engagement with the Diaspora in the region.
President Pranab Mukherjee will deliver the valedictory address on Wednesday and give away the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman awards.
