Discussions on bilateral, regional and global issues of mutual concern are high on the agenda of the 11th India-European Union Summit to be held in Brussels on Friday. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh leaves for Belgium for the summit on Thursday. EU side will be represented by the President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy and the President of European Commission Mr. Jose Barroso. Briefing newsmen in New Delhi, Secretary, West in the Ministery of External Affairs. Vivek Katju said that the summit will provide an occasion to the leaders to discuss ways and means of further strengthening the India-EU ties as the 27 member body is itself evolving and taking diverse responsibilities. An India-EU Business Summit will also take place on the margins of the Summit on the theme ‘EU-India partnership Opportunities for sustainable development. It includes exchange of views on Clean technologies in Energy and Transport and infrastructure. This will be followed by CEO’s roundtable on Growth and Partnership Opportunities. Katju said, the two sides are hopeful of concluding a Broad-Based Trade and Investment agreement early next eyear. India and the EU are also expected to sign a joint declaration on culture. Dr. Manmohan Singh will hold meetings with the Belgian leadership to discuss the potential for diversification of trade, cooperation in the fields of transport, steel, bio-technology and aeronautics. In the second leg of his two nation tour, the Prime Minister will visit Germany to hold a summit meeting with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.
