114 trapped coal miners rescued alive in China

Rescuers in China have freed 114 miners trapped for eight days at a flooded coal mine in the north Shanxi Province. Survivors were brought out on stretchers severely dehydrated. Chinese state media said another 39 workers still remain trapped in the Wangjialing Coal Mine. Rescuers are confident that more will be brought to safety. TV pictures showed the survivors being taken to hospitals in ambulances amid jubilant scenes. It is still unclear as to how the trapped miners survived.China, which relies heavily on coal to fuel its economy, has some of the most dangerous mines in the world. Most mining accidents in China are blamed on failures to follow safety rules.
