In Tamilnadu, at least 11 construction workers from Andhra Pradesh have been crushed to death after a newly built compound wall adjacent to their huts collapsed near Uttarapalayam in Tiruvallur district. According to police, a 19-year-old youth was rescued from debris.
Five fire tenders were pressed into service for rescue work.The incident occurred after heavy rain lashed the area last night. Tiruvallur District Collector K Veera Raghava Rao visited the accident spot and said those responsible for the incident would be punished.
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today announced that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) will be constituted to probe the June 28 11-storeyed building collapse at suburban Moulivakkam, in which 61 people were killed and 27 injured.
In a statement in Chennai, Ms Jayalalithaa said the SIT, to be headed by a Joint Commissioner of Police, would be under the complete supervision of the Chennai City Police Commissioner.
She said the SIT was being constituted as the expertise of engineering and architectural experts was required to probe the incident, in which six people have been arrested so far.
