Police in the Philippines say that hundreds of residents are fleeing a village in the south of the country after fighting broke out between supporters of a political clan and Moro Islamic Liberation Front rebels. Officials said at least 11 people have died in the fighting. Army spokesman Colonel Prudencio Asto said the fighting erupted when MILF rebels attacked supporters of a town mayor in Mangudadatu town in Maguindanao province. Army soldiers have been deployed in the village, 960 kilometers south of Manila, to prevent an escalation of the hostilities.
