11 killed in explosion, fire at steel plant in AP

In Andhra Pradesh, the death toll in the yesterday’s fire accident that occurred in the Vizag Steel Plant, the public sector undertaking of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited (RINL), stands at 11. Eight persons with more than 80 per cent burn injuries were admitted in the hospital. Their condition is said to be serious and are under continued medical supervision.The fire accident, a major one in the history of the steel plant occurred when the oxygen house in the Steel Melt Shop-2 exploded due to failure of its pressure regulating monitoring system. It is feared that the death toll could increase further.The bodies of the deceased are being handed over to their next and kin after conducting post-mortem in the King George Hospital.Opposition parties in the state are demanding the government for an ex-gratia to the families of the deceased and those seriously injured.The district authorities have informed that the Chief Minister, N. Kiran Kumar Reddy is coming this after-noon to visit the plant where the tragedy occurred and would call on the injured.The opposition leader in the state, N. Chandrababu Naidu is also arriving in the afternoon. While the State CPM secretary, BV Raghavulu is already in town.
