10 Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by Lankan Navy

Ten Tamil Nadu fishermen have been arrested and their two boats impounded by Sri Lankan Navy for allegedly crossing the international maritime boundary. A statement by Sri Lankan navy today said that the fishermen were fishing in Neduntheevu last night when the Lankan Navy arrested them and took to Kankesanthurai in northern Sri Lanka.

The arrest comes three days after Sri Lanka agreed to set free 51 Indian fishermen and return a large number of fishing boats in its custody. The decision was taken during a high-level ministerial level meeting of Sri Lanka and India held in Colombo on the vexed issue of fishermen on Monday. Both sides also decided to operationalize a hotline between the two coast guards and to set up a Standard Operating Procedures to release the fishermen in each other's custody.

The talks were co-chaired by Union Agriculture minister Radha Mohan Singh and Sri Lankan fisheries minister Mahinda Amaraweera. With the latest arrest, the number of Tamil Nadu fishermen in Sri Lankan custody has risen to 61.
