10 pilgrims killed in stampede at Allahabad Railway Junction

Ten pilgrims were killed and about 25 others injured in an incident of stampede at Allahabad Railway junction station later this evening.

Quoting sources, AIR Allahabad correspondent reports that the injured have been admitted at the Railway Hospital near junction Railway Station.The deceased are yet to be identified .

This incident happened when a big group of pilgrims was trying to ride the foot over bridge and some of them slipped from the bridge.

The senior railway and police officials have reached the spot for relief and rescue operations.

Large number of people from across the country are gathered today at Allahabad to take holy dip at Sangam on the pious occasion of Mauni Amavasya.

Number of casualties may increase as some of the injured are in critical condition.

Meanwhile, in Uttar Pradesh above 3 crore pilgrims have taken holy dip till now on third and most important bathing festival of Mauni Amawasya of Maha Kumbh Mela at Allahabad.

AIR correspondent reports that bathing is going on under tight security and lakhs of pilgrims are still on their way to holy dip at Sangam, the confluence of rivers Ganga, Yamuna and mythical Saraswati.

AIR Allahabad correspondent reports that two pilgrims including a woman were killed in an incident of stampede in the sector 12.

Sector Magistrate told our correspondent that both deceased have been identified and they were from Varanasi and Chaubis Paragana district in west Bengal.

About 25 thousand security personnel from state police as well as Para military forces are deployed in and around the Mela area.

Three choppers from India Air force have also been pressed into service for keeping vigil.
