In United States, at least ten people feared killed in New Jersey, New York, Mary Land and Pennsylvania and Connecticut when devastating superstorm Sandy hit eastern coast line and hurled a record-breaking 13-foot (4-meter) surge of seawater at New York City this morning .
Millions of residents have been ordered to evacuate New York City and New Jersey. The lethal storm knocked out power to at least 3.1 million people. Authority in New York said, entire Manhattan has been plunged into darkness by the storm with 250 thousand customer without power as water pressed the island from three sides.
President Barack Obama has warned Americans to take Hurricane Sandy very seriously. He also suspended his election campaign and rushed to the White House to personally review preparations. He held an emergency situation room meeting with his top advisors and officials on hurricane preparedness.
Meanwhile, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has deputed inspectors at all nuclear power plants that could
potentially experience impacts from the storm. At least eight nuclear power plants are falling on the path of Hurricane Sandy including Indian Point, in New York. Public transport has been suspended in cities up the eastern seaboard and more than 6,000 flights have been cancelled following the calamity.
Air France, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic grounded their flights to and from East Coast cities, including New York, Baltimore, Newark, Washington DC, Boston and Philadelphia. Jet Airways and Air India also cancelled its flights to Newark and New York. Air India spokesperson said the Passengers have been informed about the cancellations and transit passengers have been provided hotel accommodations in Delhi.
Sandy has already killed 69 people – 52 of them in Haiti – after sweeping through the Caribbean in the past week.
