In Armed Forces, 10 to 12 per cent of the recruits come from NCC and efforts are on to increase the number of enrolement in NCC as well as recruitment of NCC cadets in armed forces. Replying to the supplementaries in the Lok Sabha during question hour, Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar said, the government had decided to increase the strength of NCC to 15 lakhs in phases starting from 2011-12. He said, Rs 8737 lakh have been allocated so far this year for NCC activities in the country.
Mr. Parrikar informed the members that 26 per cent of the total NCC enrolment are women cadets and steps are being taken to further encourage their enrolment. The Minister said, attempts would also be made to make NCC compulsory in schools in limited number along the border areas. The Minister said other steps to promote NCC educational institutions include personality development programmes, NCC National Games, Training of Cadets to joint defence forces and opening of NCC Units in private institutions under Self Financing Scheme.
